Mehndi MadnessTM Blog
The henna we use at Mehndi Madness is 100% natural, which means no PPD (para-Phenylenediamine) , otherwise known as “Black Henna”. We do occasionally get clients who want a darker stain, for this we offer Jagua, which is another natural material that stains the skin a blackish blue and works much like henna by staining dead layers of skin. However, Black Henna is harmful! PPD has side effects like, irritated skin and increased sensitivity to the sun in the applied area, redness, burning, blistering skin, “oozing” lesions, and can also cause permanent scarring.
Have you seen those pre-mixed henna cones? They can typically be found online and Indian import stores. These henna cones contain additives like Silver Nitrate, Chromium, Carmine, Pyrogallol, and artificial dyes. These additives are included in pre-mixed cones in order to preserve the stain of the henna, giving it a longer shelf life. However, these ingredients can also cause allergic reactions to the skin like redness, irritation, and inflammation. These side effects can be instant or late-onset.
Anyone with G6PD deficiency should not use henna. Studies have shown that henna can cause a hemolytic crisis specifically in infants. Learn more...click here to access the EPA website with more information.
Remember, buying 100% natural henna powder is the best way to go! This powder can be kept in your freezer for up to 2 years (results may vary) and is the safest way to get your gorgeous mehndi. If the henna powder you buy is green, that is good. If you're not sure, don't use it! Better to be safe than sorry! Ask your local henna artist if they sell take-home kits, Mehndi Madness does! You can order them online or stop by our studios/festival booths to buy some!
