Diwali is also known as the “Festival of Lights”. It is an ancient hindu festival that takes place every autumn. This festival symbolizes the power of good over evil, light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. It is a very happy celebration that lasts five days. This year, Diwali falls on October 23rd and is an official holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad, Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore, and Fiji.
4th Day: Padwa
This day celebrates the relationship between a wife and husband. Couples exchange heartfelt gifts, and in some cultures newlyweds are invited to in-laws houses to be treated to special meals. This is celebrated similarly to western customs of wedding anniversaries.
5th Day: Bhai Duj
The last day of the Diwali celebration celebrates the brother-sister relationship, similarly to the celebration called Raksha Bandhan, which is also a festival celebrating sibling relationships. However these two celebrations have different customs. This day focuses on the everlasting bond between siblings. Women and girls gather together and pray and present offerings for their brothers. A feast is enjoyed as well as gift giving.
The festival of Diwali celebrated all relationships in a persons life between themselves and their religion, families, friends, and loved ones.
