KrysteenSince 1998, Mehndi Madness has stayed a glitter free Henna company despite many other companies switching over to applying glitter with their Henna designs. However, many scientists have called for a ban on glitter because most glitter is made from plastic. The small size of the plastics’ particles makes it a potential ecological hazard, particularly in the oceans.
The small size of the microplastic is less than 5 millimeters in length making the pieces look like food items for marine animals. Many animals have been documented eating this plastic, from the smallest plankton to the biggest Whale, all have eating plastic at some time or another. During this documentation many fatal consequences from the consumption of plastic has been seen. To take this a step farther a Professor named Richard Thompson led a study reporting a third of UK-caught fish were found with plastic in them.
Pollution in our oceans and the environment is a hot topic in the world today, we are seeing a lot of negative changes to the environment due to pollution especially from plastic. With this, a lot of companies have fallen in line to support our oceans and see to it that the Earth stays healthy.
There are ways that you, the customer, can help the environment and your local Henna artist that uses glitter. There are biodegradable glitter options available if the artist must use glitter, or you help by requesting no glitter on your Henna design. For example, Lush is a fresh handmade cosmetics company that uses biodegradable glitter in all their products like, bath bombs, face scrubs, soaps etc. These products would be going straight down the drain and into our water systems and oceans. By using biodegradable glitter, it will only take a few months to break down since it is made with microorganisms found in places like soil. The ocean and other small organism will then eat the particles causing no harm to the marine animals or the ocean environment.
Glitter adds nothing to the overall Henna design and will only last as long as the paste is on, if that. This is one for the reasons why Mehndi Madness elected not to use it from the beginning. We want the beauty of henna to be the focus. Now that you know, as the customer, that there are options other than the harmful plastic glitter, try to help the cause by asking for no glitter or recommend the artist use a biodegradable glitter. After all Henna shines all on its own!
