KrysteenHenna is such a beautiful and timeless tradition. One would think there would be all kinds of poetry written about this substantial artwork. It’s usually present in life’s significant moments. You’ll see it in most family gatherings, for a new birth, graduation, and wedding celebrations. I love seeing people celebrated in more common ways as birthdays and festivals. I have clients who come back year after year because it’s a tradition for them to go to a special event, such as a festival, with their friends and family and to receive Henna.
My daughter is in her senior year at University and taking a poem class. I asked her to write a henna poem for me and this is what she came up with. I think it’s poignant and touches on those feelings most of us have when receiving this awesome gift.
I find comfort in the earthy
cold, smooth paste,
that form swirls with endless
additives for all occasions.
Surprise, eyes wide
when the first design
rest upon my hand.
But only for a moment,
before Swoosh it’s a smudge.
Eyes glitter and shimmer
with a light of euphoria,
for the special day. Flowers
swirl from my hands to my arms,
as I look for our initials.
Eyes flooded, translucent
looking at the intricate lines
decorating my swollen
belly that harbors the legacy
to this long tradition.
A guest invited to all memorable,
intimate, moments with
a design for each distinct stamp
in time.
