Cheap henna vs. expensive henna?
By: Krysteen Lomanaco ~ 7/22/2009

First and foremost, if your a professional henna artists, meaning you charge for your work, use a professional henna.  Professional henna can be bought from a supplier online and is always current crop and doesn't need sifting.  Current crop means it's from the latest crop available and it should stain well.  Pre-sifted henna should be fine like flour and will go through any applicator smoothly.  It can cost between $6-$15 per 100 gm.  There is cheaper henna, sometimes called box henna, found in import and grocery stores.  It may have been on the shelf for a long time and could be old, affecting the staining quality.  They range in price from $2-$8 per 100gm and many are full of ground up stems and twigs.  Lots of on-line suppliers will send you a sample so ask before you buy.  Also, be sure there has been nothing added to the henna you buy and that it is only 100% pure Lawsonia inermis.
