Lemons or Limes?
By: Krysteen Lomonaco ~ 10/8/2010

Henna is mixed with citric acid because it acts as a mordent and gives it staining power.  In the US most people use recipes loaded with lemon juice but in other countries, where henna is done traditionally, people use limes.  Is there a difference?  I found out.  The right one is done with limes and eucalyptus oil and the left with lemon and eucalyptus oil.  2 days later the lime recipe is darker, faster, then the lemon recipe.  Since it was on my daughter I could see a few days later that the lemon mixture got a bit darker then the pictures shows but it also faded faster.  So the verdict for this test is: Lime juice works better, stains darker and lasts a bit longer.

Do you want to do the test?  Be sure to test it on the same person, on the same body part that typically stains well, like hands, feet, ankles or wrists. Mix both at the same time and let activate the same amount of time.  Then send us pictures of your results with any comments you have.  I'd love to see them.
